‘Knight’ terror for Cruise as ‘Toy’ tops

The animated 3-D hit topped the charts for the second week, earning $59 million to trounce two high-profile new releases. Adam Sandler ’s “Grown Ups” landed No. 2 with $41 million in sales despite a thrashing from critics for the movie that also stars Kevin James , Chris Rock , David Spade and Rob Schneider as reunited school buddies. “Toy Story 3″ also cast a shadow on Tom Cruise ’s action comedy ” Knight and Day ,” leaving it a distant third with disappointing sales of $20.5 million – the worst opening for a Cruise action flick in 20 years. “Knight and Day,” the story of a fugitive couple racing across the globe, features Cruise as a charming spy alongside co-star Cameron Diaz . Walt Disney Co. ’s Pixar Studio’s “Toy Story 3″ has pulled in $226.6 million since its June 18 release. Rounding out the top five were Sony ’s ” The Karate Kid ” with a take of $15.4 million and Fox’s “The A-Team” with $6 million in ticket sales.Jane H.
