iOS 4.1 to launch Sept. 8: Apple UK

by on Sep.05, 2010, under Technology, U.S.

While Apple CEO Steve Jobs said on Wednesday that iOS 4.1 would be coming to iPhones and iPod touches this coming week, he didn’t give a date. It seems the Apple U.K. site’s webmaster has put up some different info that in the U.S., with their site giving an exact date: Sept. 8. The U.S. site continues to say “Coming Soon,” but we’ll assume that rather than making two mistakes (posting a date, and posting a wrong date) that the Sept. 8 is correct. It also makes sense since the new iPod touches will ship on Sept.

Intel’s mind reading computer could bring thought controlled interfaces to a whole new, frigthening level

by on Aug.25, 2010, under Technology, U.S.

Thought controlled devices are pretty primitive at this point. Sure, everyone from Honda to the U.S. Army (of course) is conducting research, but at this point we don’t have much to show for it all besides an evening of experimental music in Prague . If the kids at Intel have their way, computers will soon be able to look at a person’s brain activity and determine actual words that they’re thinking. The idea here is that the activity generated in the average person by individual words can be mapped and stored in a database, to be matched against that of someone using the though control interface. So far, results have been promising — an early prototype exists that can differentiate between words like screwdriver, house, and barn, by using a magnetic resonance scanner that measures something like 20,000 points in the brain. Anything more effective than that, such as dictating letters or searching Google with your mind alone is probably years in the future — though when it does come to pass we expect to see a marked increase in expletive-filled liveblogs . Apple supply manager arrested for wire fraud, money laundering

by on Aug.14, 2010, under Business, Technology, U.S.

Ever wonder why — after years of secrecy — camera-ready iPod cases began rolling out? The answer could possibly be Apple supply manager Paul Shin Devine, who was just fingered by the FBI and IRS as a fraudulent, money laundering mole. Devine was arrested Friday for allegedly receiving kickbacks from six accessory suppliers in exchange for confidential information, which apparently gave them an edge in negotiating Apple contracts. “The alleged scheme used an elaborate chain of U.S. and foreign bank accounts and one front company to receive payments,” reports the San Jose Mercury News , “and code words like ’sample’ were used to refer to the payments so that Apple co-workers wouldn’t become suspicious.” Though we’re not yet sure what specific confidential information might have been passed along and we doubt the indictment will say, a separate civil suit filed by Apple claims Devine accepted over $1 million in “payments, kickbacks and bribes” over the course of several years.
