Windows Phone 7 dev tools go gold September 16, Marketplace taking submissions in October
by on Aug.23, 2010, under Health, Technology
Microsoft’s held the line since its February announce that Windows Phone 7 is going to be ready in time for the holidays this year — and from what we’ve seen recently , we believe it — so today they’re announcing another small step in the process by finalizing the dev tools that first bowed at MIX in March. Specifically, the gold build will be hitting streets on September 16, just a little under a month from today, while the Marketplace will start accepting apps sometime in early October. Now, if you want to throw a little conjecture at this and make a few assumptions along the way, you could reasonably argue that Microsoft wants a healthy catalog of apps available for purchase on launch day one and that it’ll probably take them at least a week or two to approve those first titles — which means that if everything goes perfectly, we could theoretically see retail hardware on shelves by the end of October. Again, that’s purely conjecture on our part, but it’s pretty juicy to think that we could be playing with a Cetus in around two months’ time, isn’t it? Jennifer Aniston under fire for ‘retard’ comment made during ‘Live with Regis and Kelly’ interview
by admin on Aug.21, 2010, under Celebrity Gossip, Health
Rothenberg for News Jennifer Aniston came under fire for saying a controversial word on ‘Live with Regis and Kelly.’ Jennifer Aniston’s words seem to be getting her in trouble lately. During an appearance on “Live with Regis and Kelly” Thursday, the actress let a controversial word slip as she was discussing her recent photo shoot for Harper’s Bazaar, in which she dressed up as Barbra Streisand. “You played dress up!” host Regis Philbin told the actress. She casually replied, “I played dress up! I do it for a living, like a retard!” Following the interview, the actress, who stars in the new romantic comedy “The Switch,” came under fire for her “extraordinarily offensive and inappropriate” comment. “Frankly, someone in her position ought to know better,” Peter Berns, CEO of The Arc (a nonprofit advocate for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities), told UsMagazine.com . “She is using language that is offensive to a large segment of the population in this country.” “We estimate that there are probably in excess of 5 million people in the country with intellectual disabilities, and when you think about all of them, their family members and friends, you’re talking about tens of millions of people who find the use of that term to be really offensive,” he added. “Every time folks hear that word, it kind of reminds them of all the discrimination and oppression they’ve experienced in their lives. Even if it wasn’t intended to insult them, that is the effect of it.” Aniston, 41, isn’t the only public figure who has been attacked for using the word. Earlier this year, Sarah Palin scolded Rahm Emanuel for calling liberal groups opposed to health care reform “f—ing retards.” “Sadly, people use the word pervasively even if they don’t realize it,” said Kirsten Seckler, spokeswoman for the Special Olympics. “People with intellectual disabilities have fought their whole lives for understanding and recognition. When people continue to use the R word, it’s hurtful.” Bill O’Reilly also recently slammed Aniston for her comments made about single parenthood. The Fox News host called the actress “destructive to society.” This entry passed through the Full-Text RSS service — if this is your content and you’re reading it on someone else’s site, please read our FAQ page at fivefilters.org/content-only/faq.php Five Filters featured article: “Peace Envoy” Blair Gets an Easy Ride in the Independent .

HP reports Q3 2010 earnings, posts $2.3 billion operating profit
by on Aug.19, 2010, under Health, Technology
And to think — that $2.3 billion figure might have been a few million higher if not for the absurd Golden Parachute that Mark Hurd will continue to float on for centuries to come. All jesting aside, HP published its Q3 2010 financials today, reporting a healthy $2.3b in operating profit (not to be confused with net income, which deducts those massive corporate taxes) and a five percent increase year-over-year. All told, third quarter revenue was listed at $30.7 billion (an 11.4 percent uptick from last year), with a “record” amount of services signings. Interestingly, a whopping 63 percent of total HP revenue came from outside of America, though we’re struggling to find any specific mentions of Hurd or Palm in the release (embedded after the break). We’ll be checking in on the press call shortly — we’ll let you know if anything crazy goes down. iWiz dev does good, becomes Apple App Store director
by on Aug.18, 2010, under Health, Technology
To be perfectly honest, we can’t believe the above image is running on Engadget either. But with all the ongoing hoopla surrounding the App Store approval process , we’d be remiss if we didn’t hep you to recently reported news that Phillip Shoemaker, director of applications technology at Apple, seems to have a healthy sideline developing iOS software with names like iWiz and, ahem , Animal Farts. We’ll let you hit the store yourself if you want to learn more about these fine products (search for his company, Gray Noodle). For Apple’s part, the company states that the apps were submitted and approved before Shoemaker got the job — and that, indeed, he was hired in part because of his experience as a developer. Now, if we could only get that Pocket Pain Doctor guy a real job. He looks like he could use one! Update: We also thought we’d mention that, although Apple stated that the apps were submitted and approved before dude got the job, Shoemaker Tweeted that he had his new employee orientation on March 9, 2009 — and that Gray Noodle was still publishing apps a month later. What does this mean, exactly? We’re not sure (and we’re not sure we care), but we figured we’d throw it out there nonetheless. Yurina health care robot promises to help lift, terrify patients
by on Aug.13, 2010, under Health, Technology
We already got a look at a robot wheelchair that was on display at the recent Next-Generation Robot Manufacturing Exhibition in Japan, but it wasn’t the only robotic health care device on display at the show — this so-called Yurina robot from Japan Logic Machine was also busy impressing attendees with its patient-lifting abilities. This one offers more than just brute strength, however, as it can also convert itself to a wheelchair that’s nimble enough to navigate narrow hallways and be controlled using either by voice directions, a touchscreen, or a Wii nunchuck-type controller. Head on past the break to check it out in action — and make sure your speakers are turned up.
